CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development.
As defined by the CPD Standards Office (CDPSO), a prominent accreditation body in the UK and a member of the Professional Development Consortium:
CPD is the intentional maintenance and development of the knowledge and skills needed to perform in a professional context. This could mean honing current skills, it could mean developing them to a new level, or it could mean learning new ones that will allow an employee’s job role to expand or prepare them for potential promotion.
CPD is not a qualification, but bitesize learning that keeps qualifications up to date and prevents them from becoming obsolete. It is equally important for people without degrees but in a chosen career to demonstrate a commitment to expanding their skills and knowledge.
CPD Standards accreditation involves thorough examination of the educational authority of a training, how it is delivered, its trainers/instructors' credibility, how learners' feedback is captured, and the compliance with relevant regulations on Data Protection, Complaints Handling Policy, etc.
CPD accreditation provided by CPDSO took into account the CPD Standards Research which was conducted in partnership with more than 30 educational institutions in the UK, including Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), Engineering Council, Solicitors Regulation Authority, etc.
